YAAAAAAASSSSSS: Erykah Badu for Givenchy

Look. My love for Erykah Badu stretches far beyond fandom smooth into the throes of standom. She is my absolute favorite but I never imagined I would have the chance to write about her over here. So when I saw the picture above, featuring her in a Givenchy add, my heart cried out YAAAAAASSSS!!!  Of his selection Riccardo Tisci says

Erykah, she’s an icon—come on! What I want to do with my advertising campaign is spread the love. Already now it’s been three seasons that I’ve been using people that express something—they are great artists, or beautiful women, or stylish women, or models that I really believe in. It’s kind of a family portfolio.

Yes she is Riccardo!! But this is not Badu’s first brush with a luxury label:

Circa 2008

I love that Badu is selective with her brand. Surely a woman of her beauty is approached all the time by beauty brands and designers alike. Because she is selective, she can pull heavy hitters and make people really take notice.

Basel On The Brain: Louis Vuitton Beach House

Image from wwd.com

I live in Miami. This week, Art Basel, is pretty much the most exciting of the year. Between the art, the parties (some of which I’m still trying to finagle my entrance), and the eccentric crowd, the vibration in the city is going to be electric. This is my 3rd Basel in Miami and I’m always looking for new and interesting experiences, particularly where art and fashion collide. Many brands the are taking the opportunity to unveil art & sculptures in their Design District store fronts. But the big buzz belongs to Louis Vuitton. This year as a part of Design Miami, the brand has built a beach house called “La maison au bord de l’eau” based on Charlotte Perriand’s 1934 design. This beach house has never been constructed before. The idea that something planned in 1934 is breathing its first life in 2013 is so inspiring. Further, I’m interested in seeing how the idea of luxury has evolved. The contrast will be palpable given the excess of present day Miami.

Have any other suggestions for exhibits I should see or parties I should attend? Leave them in the comments!
